Ayrshire

For a taste of 'picture postcard' Scotland, there is no finer destination than Ayrshire and Arran. Located on the spectacular Clyde coast, Ayrshire and Arran serve up a wealth of history and ancient castles, gorgeous scenery, fantastic country parks, vibrant market towns and some of Britain's best golf courses.

Few places in Scotland can boast the variety of scenery on offer in Ayrshire and Arran. From exceptional windswept and desolate coastline and beguiling villages to the powerful and awe-inspiring mountainous landscape of the central areas to the rolling green hills and woodlands of the south there is something for everyone in Ayrshire. Golf fanatics have the Open Championship courses of Prestwick, Royal Troon and Turnberry amongst others, whilst history buffs can check out Culzean Castle and Country Park, located on top of a cliff in Maybole and known as the Jewel in the Crown of Scotland's National Trust. Other castles worth viewing are Brodick Castle, Dean Castle and Kelburn Castle. There are also some fabulous, and occasionally eerie ruins at sites such as Loch Doon, Portencross, Dunure, Greenan, Dundonald, and Eglinton.

Of course there's also Ayr itself, a grand and bustling Victorian seaside resort town with a glorious long white sandy beach and a plethora of faded Victorian and Georgian buildings. Down the coast there are many more small villages, seaside towns and market towns all worth a visit. With so much to see and do, Ayrshire is an ideal region for a touring holiday, not only for the scenery but for the history and multiple attractions on offer.
